She opened her briefcase and pulled out a folder.

“Before they passed away, their parents came to my office to prepare a will,” she explained. “They were healthy. They simply wanted to plan ahead.”

My chest tightened.

“In that will, they made arrangements for the children,” she continued. “They also placed certain assets into a trust.”

“Assets?”

“A small house,” she replied. “And some savings. Not enormous, but meaningful. Legally, everything belongs to the children.”
