I slowly became part of their small little world. Luca’s laugh, Mira’s sleepy hugs, the scent of warm milk in the mornings—it all felt like a life I had wandered into unexpectedly.

Then one afternoon, Elena told me she was moving away.

“I found somewhere new,” she said, keeping her voice calm though uncertainty lingered in her eyes. “A better place for them.”

I nodded and tried to smile, but something inside my chest tightened.

By her final day, the apartment was almost empty. A few bags remained while the twins played on the floor, unaware that everything was about to change.

When it was time to leave, she hugged me.

Not briefly. Not out of politeness.

She held me tightly.
