I Thought She Was Just a Single Mother… Until I Learned What She Did After Midnight

The officer’s expression softened immediately.

“She’s alive,” he said quickly. “There was an accident. Early this morning. She’ll recover, but she needs time.”

Relief hit me so hard my knees nearly gave out.

“Why… why are you here?”

The officers exchanged a glance before one of them handed me a sealed envelope.

“She listed you as her emergency contact.”

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a short note in her familiar handwriting.

“I have no one else I trust with my babies. Please.”

I stared at the sentence while my heart pounded.

No one else.

Out of everyone in the world… she chose me.

Two hours later, I was sitting on a train with a small bag beside me and a thousand thoughts running through my head.

When I entered her hospital room, she somehow looked smaller than before. Pale. Fragile. But the moment her eyes met mine—

She broke down.

Tears poured down her face as she reached toward me.

“You came,” she whispered, her voice shaking.

“Of course I did,” I said, holding her hand.
