She called out to me from behind her fence.

Inside, she poured me tea that tasted like boiled grass and got straight to the point.

“I’m dying,” she said.

I nearly choked on the tea.

“Oh, don’t be ridiculous! I’m 85, not 12. The doctor says maybe a few years, maybe less. I need help. Groceries, medication, rides, repairs. I don’t have anyone dependable.”

“And in return?”

She studied me for a moment. “When I’m gone, everything I own becomes yours. I’ll leave it all to you.”
