My 15-year-old daughter kept complaining about nausea and severe stomach pain. My husband brushed it off and said, “she’s just faking it. Don’t waste time or money.” So I secretly took her to the hospital myself. The doctor stared at the scan and whispered, “there’s something inside her…” All I could do was scream.

The drive to Riverside Medical Center felt endless. Maya stared silently out the car window the entire way.

Outside, the sky looked dark and heavy, like a storm waiting to break.

When we finally arrived, the hospital doors slid open with a mechanical hum that sounded strangely loud in the still afternoon air.

The smell of antiseptic filled the building as we approached the reception desk. A nurse greeted us and asked for Maya’s name.
