My father said she was upset and would eventually calm down. My mother told me not to let Claire ruin my day. So I smiled for relatives, thanked guests for their presents, and pretended my stomach wasn’t twisting itself into knots.
An hour later, my mother’s phone rang.
She listened quietly, then turned pale and covered her mouth with her hand. “There was a crash,” she whispered.
