Behind me, Michael and Mara were already tense. Noah had two children now, and Thomas still packed little snack containers for them even after his hands began trembling. To Noah, loyalty tasted like peanut butter crackers.

Mara stepped closer. “That’s all you have to say? He waited for you for years, Susan.”

Michael added, “He sent cards. He called. He left the porch light on every single night.”

“He’s still my father.”

Pain flashed across Susan’s face so quickly I almost missed it.

“I did what I had to do, guys,” she said.

Mara turned away in disgust.

I had only seen Thomas cry a few times in my life, and one of those moments was the weekend I found him sitting alone on the porch with Susan’s note in his hand.

“I’m leaving,” the note read. “I’m staying with a friend. I need to build my life on my own terms.”
