I believed I was stepping into a family that had already endured its deepest loss. But one innocent question from Daniel’s older daughter slowly revealed that something inside that house wasn’t right.
Early in our relationship, Daniel told me something that nearly made me walk away.
“I have two daughters,” he said. “Grace is six, Emily is four. Their mother passed away three years ago.”
He spoke quietly, but I could sense the weight behind his words.
I reached across the table. “I appreciate you telling me.”
He gave a faint, tired smile. “Most people hear that and leave.”
