Henry was not even three hours old. I still had an IV in my arm. My body felt torn apart, and my son rested against my chest, his tiny fist gripping my hospital gown.

The neurologist spoke gently, which I later realized is how people talk right before your life splits into before and after.

“There is motor impairment,” she said. “We won’t know everything today, but Henry will need therapy, support, and close monitoring over the next few months.”

I nodded as if she were giving me directions to a pharmacy.

Henry was not even three hours old.
